People Can START Pollution
People Can STOP Pollution

A successful & moving public service campaign

Photo courtesy of PhotobucketResurrected from the 70's, now available on YouTube (and the PBMS Webzine!), the original "Indian with the teardrop" public service commercial was one of the most influential, successful campaigns of all time. It also inspired two sequels. While the last commercial was equally as moving as the first, it did not go very far. Luckily, it can now be embedded into websites and promoted through networking sites!

The late actor, known as Chief Iron Eyes Cody, was actually Italian, although he was married to a Native American woman. More importantly than his true defining DNA, he lived his life in gratitude for mother earth. A link to his autobiography, entitled, Iron Eyes: My Life as a Hollywood Indian is available below.

Originally airing on Earth Day 1971, this public service announcement, had an incredible impact on 70's society and brought about true change.

This was followed by another PSA with Chief Iron Eyes Cody on a horse.

Then, Back By Popular Neglect, upon the death of Chief Iron Eyes Cody in 1998, this equally moving PSA was created. Unfortunately, it's run was short lived and aired in only a few markets.

Editors Note:

After having read many of the threads in response to this kind of campaign, interesting points have been made about the authenticity and possible impression this campaign has truly had. Overall, there is much support and encouragement for keeping this campaign going.

According to my mother, the type of littering that is demonstrated in these commercials is not nearly the problem it was prior to these campaigns. Yay!

Currently, there is evidence that the "invisible" cancer & disease causing toxins available in many everyday products such as fragrances & toiletries, plastics, automobiles, cleaning chemicals, pharmaceuticals, etc... are even more dangerous to the delicate balance of the earth's eco-system...

People can start pollution. People can stop pollution.

Also, while awareness is synonymous with power, it is recommended that great care be taken to focus on solutions & individual responsibility, rather than just point out the problems. What can you do as an individual?

In the meantime, as an experienced mother, I am convinced that it is the responsibility of parents and other adults to ensure that children are encouraged to respect our habitat I am convinced that this compelling campaign is still an effective tool for teaching.

As a child of the 70's I KNOW it worked for me!

Joy and Gratitude,
Crystal Achey, Editor
