Say to yourself, "I forgive others whom I have perceived to have hurt me, knowing that they can only hurt me if I allow them. I am responsible for my feelings, not others. So it is not possible for anyone to hurt me and forgiveness comes without effort."
When this is understood forgiveness comes easy.
TRY THIS DAILY CLEANSING MEDITATION:
Before retiring to bed at night, consider the days activities.
Focus on something that filled you with anger, hurt or frustration or anything painful.
Ask yourself, "What did I learn? What can I do better next time?"
Say to yourself, "Only I can control me and I choose to__________ before that happens again!"
The next step is to forgive yourself and others involved. Let the warmth of compassion flow through you. Imagine it surrounding you, flowing out from you. Draw upon your Spiritual tradition to assist you.
Once you've allowed yourself to feel the peace of loving compassion fill your being, take a slow breath and release it, along with the experience. Allow the compassion to flow into the space where the pain has departed. Notice how light and relaxed you feel as you simply experience peace.
Now focus on a moment of the day when you felt great joy, empowered, or peaceful. Bask in it's warmth.
Ask yourself, "What did I learn? How can I use this insight tomorrow?"
Say to yourself, "I have the power to surround myself with joy by choosing to_________."
Finally, take a long deep breath and let it out as you release the energy of the day. Acknowledge the gift of wisdom you have received. Focus on the gratitude you feel flowing through you, out of you, surrounding you.
Close by drawing upon your spiritual tradition.

VISUALIZE... yourself responding to any future altercations by offering feelings of compassion, consideration and kindness as opposed to speaking or sending hurtful words and thoughts toward the "offending party".
PRAY... When Jesus taught his disciples to pray, he taught them this prayer (Matthew 6:9-13):
Our Father in Heaven, may your name be honored.
May your kingdom come.
May what you want to happen be done on earth, as it is done in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins, just as we also have forgiven those who sin against us.
Keep us from sin when we are tempted.
Save us from the evil one.
Then, Matthew writes that Jesus immediately emphasizes the importance of forgiveness (Mathew 6:14-15).
Food for thought: Why does God want you to forgive?
