I learned to teach yoga in 1999 through At One Yoga in Scottsdale. I was in one of the very first teacher training programs in the valley, with just 12 participants! I returned in 2002 and completed my 200 hour certification, which is the standard. My interest in yoga therapy then led me to Scottsdale Community College, where I took classes specifically for hips, knees, shoulders and back care.
I began teaching immediately after I completed my training, and offered free classes in my workplace so people could come and unwind during their lunch hour. Since then, I’ve taught at gyms, corporate locations, senior living centers, and yoga studios. I’ve also done private classes in other’s homes as well as my own.
"Being able to de-stress and clear your mind is a must in the workplace!"
I became interested in yoga for stress relief just like many others, and I found immediate relief and a deep spiritual connection that I’d never experienced before. The relaxation was profound and as I was able to quiet my mind. I also benefited from greater clarity and decreased stress. Eventually this led to life changing decisions on how to live my life regarding relationships, employment, and family matters. The yoga journey can be eye opening and rather difficult as you begin to look at yourself in a new light and you find a new sense of self-awareness. Yoga has changed me in many ways: I now feel more comfortable with who I am, and realize a greater potential awakening inside.
"I’m not as fearful as I once was. I feel a stronger purpose in making my dreams come true and a greater sense of peace and acceptance."
My once frequent migraines have subsided and can be controlled without prescription medication. Overall, my immune system has been strengthened to where I am sick much less. A physical, emotional, and spriritual shift has taken place since I began practicing, and I know I can only expect many more exciting changes in the future!
My article “Keeping Cool Behind the Wheel” was published inSonoran News, I’ve done yoga demonstrations on the television show Sonoran Living, and in 2008 I was asked to be a monthly contributor to Phoenix Body Mind and Soul magazine. In addition, I am working on a yoga video series to appear on ExpertVillage, plus creating yoga podcasts, and finishing my book- "Using Yoga for Weight Loss".
"I would recommend that new students start off with a gentle yoga class, in order to learn the postures and to feel connected to their bodies."
A faster moving class can be difficult to follow and the needed mindfulness may not be possible. I prefer Iyengar yoga, which teaches students the techniques of yoga postures in a precise and safe manner, plus there are many therapeutic applications.~ Kim Devery
