Accepting the Unacceptable
Beauty Produces the Idea of Ugliness: The 2nd Verse of the Tao
As interpreted by Wayne Dyer in Change Your Thoughts- Change Your Life: Living the Wisdom of the Tao
"Has it ever occured to you that beauty depends on something being identified as ugly?Therefore, the idea of beauty produces the idea of ugliness, and vice versa." ~Wayne Dyer
Under heaven all can see beauty as beauty, only because there is ugliness.
All can know good as good,
only because there is evil.
Being and non being produce each other.
The difficult is born in the easy.
Long is defined by short, the high by the low.
Before and after go along with each other.
So the sage lives openly with apparent duality and paradoxical unity.
The sage can act without effort and teach without words.
Nurturing things without possessing them,
he works, but not for rewards;
he competes, but not for results.
When the work is done, it is forgotten.
That is why it lasts forever.
I have to constantly remind myself of the lessons found in the truth of this verse. I believe it is wise for those who wish for peace and harmony to understand the idea that it is impossible to have good without bad in an attempt to emotionally accept the bad that exists. It is merely in our judgment that certain things are deemed good or bad, beautiful or ugly, short or tall, etc. Perhaps this verse is a reminder to just "be" and do good anyways. But for me, it is mostly a good way to emotionally deal with things such as human trafficking, violently oppressive governments, war and terrorism, child abuse and other irresponsible, inconsiderate human behavior; things that I often find emotionally mortifying. Thus allowing me to just be. What do you get out of this verse?
